Dickson Medical Associates (DMA) is pleased to welcome Dr. Bryan Doherty as its new Non-Invasive Cardiologist. Doherty recently completed a Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship with the Lenox Hill Heart and Vascular Institute in New York City.
Doherty was born in Canada and grew up in Ireland, where he attended medical school at the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin. His intent was always to practice medicine in the United States. Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Doherty completed his Residency and a Chief Residency at St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center, also in New York City.
“What was immediately apparent to my wife and I on moving to Tennessee is how friendly the people are,” said Doherty. “I already know every single one of my neighbors, six houses down each way, and all the houses across the street. Coming from New York, I lived in an apartment building with 86 apartments. I knew maybe one person in passing.”
Dr. Doherty will work alongside Dr. David Blazer and Dr. Ehab Kasasbeh at DMA’s cardiology offices located on the third floor of Tri-Star Horizon Hospital.
As a non-invasive cardiologist, Dr. Doherty will provide a greater focus on the diagnostic side of cardiac care. His expertise will add to some of the services that DMA Cardiology already provides including nuclear stress testing and echocardiography, having board certifications in both modalities.
“With my expertise in non-invasive and preventative cardiology, these skills will compliment those of my colleagues, Dr. Blazer and Dr. Kasasbeh, affording patients attending the practice a significantly wider range of therapeutic options,” Doherty said.
In his approach to patient care, Doherty recognizes the multi faceted nature of patient disease and he intends to bring a focus on patient care that addresses these challenges. In doing this he will seek to engage in a holistic way with the issues that patients and primary care providers may struggle with, a range of diagnoses that extend from blood pressure management to complex arrhythmias.
One of his foremost objectives with approaching cardiac care is to see what the diagnosis means to his patients and provide them with a thorough understanding of their condition.
“I think it can often be pretty emotive coping with a cardiac problem,” said Doherty. “In my opinion, patients often find it valuable to tease out some of these emotions. I am here to reassure when necessary and to provide additional options when the answer is not so simple. Half the battle is understanding the illness.”
“My dad is a doctor too and one of the real personality traits he instilled in me when practicing medicine is the need for humility when it comes to the trust people place in their doctors,” said Doherty. “He told me to never let that humility fade and never be blind to how much it means for someone to seek your advice on some of their most personal issues.”
Dr. Bryan Doherty is currently available to see patients Mondays through Fridays from 8 am to 5 pm. Appointments can be made by phone at 615-441-4448.
